It was no easy task to find the perfect dog to play Bella. Screenwriters W. Bruce Cameron and Cathryn Michon went on a long search, combing through shelters across the United States. “We looked at pictures and videos of dogs all over America,” Michon said. The team wanted to adopt a shelter dog and explore ways to put a positive spin on rescue animals

The search led to Tennessee, to the Cheatham County Animal Control Center, where Shelby had come in as a stray at roughly one and a half years old. Rescued from a landfill, she was malnourished but wagging her tail with excitement. Shelby was always happy, regardless of the situation, said T. J. Jordi, an animal control officer.

The eventual trainer, Teresa A. Miller, who worked with Shelby for the film, was taken aback by her charm. “We needed a dog with energy and physicality, but Shelby’s eyes spoke the volume. “She had all of her love and heart right there for you to see — instantly,” Miller said. Shelby, a Rottweiler-German Shepherd mix, was an obvious choice for Bella, bringing warmth and expressiveness to the role.

When Hollywood reached out to the Cheatham County shelter, skepticism was only natural. “We’re in a small town, so we wanted to make sure this was real,” Jordi said. Shelby came to the show after extensive research by the shelter, which had entrusted its dog to the production team. Shelters were terrified that she would be too fast, too aggressive, too wound up, too overbearing, and when trainer Teresa Miller showed up and took a very slow, considered approach to interacting with Shelby, the shelter staff found it reassuring. “You know that even if Shelby hadn’t ended up in the movie, Teresa would have taken her home herself,” Jordi added.

Shelby was not alone on her path to stardom. Amber, another rescue dog from South Carolina, was brought in as Shelby’s stand-in. And at two-and-a-half years old, Amber had her unique skills to offer to the film. “Amber is great for fast-paced things, like digging,” Miller said, “while Shelby is more relaxed and does it on her own.” The duo made sure Bella’s character would feel alive on screen.

Bryce Dallas Howard, who lent her voice to Bella in the film, was immediately smitten with Shelby. “The moment I met Shelby, we were best friends,” Howard shared. “There’s something so genuine about her. She’s present, loving, and truly special.”

Howard’s affinity for Shelby was a natural fit; she’s been a dog person for as long as she can remember. Looking back on her childhood, she recalled how her first family dog helped her emerge from her shell. “I was an extremely quiet child until we got a terrier. And one day, my parents heard a huge belly laugh from the other room, and it was me playing tug-of-war. That dog changed me.”

Shelby now lives in California with trainer Teresa Miller and has found a new calling as a therapy dog. Now, Shelby works with a nonprofit organization called Paws for Effect, giving love and more love to autistic children and visiting children’s hospitals. “Shelby’s personality fits this work perfectly,” Miller said. “She gives people a sense of being cared for and safe.”

“Shelby knows this is her purpose — to care for people and make them feel loved,” Howard added.
